DLOBML CHAPTER 6
Chapter 6 — F*** Your Abusive Romance (4) | Damn That Ridiculous “Main Character Halo”! No Wonder Cannon Fodder Always Ends Up Depressed or Dead!
Xing Ge pressed her temples hard, trying to suppress the urge to start swearing on the spot.
She forced the twitching muscles of her face into something resembling a smile as guests came up to offer congratulations. Beside her, Mrs. Chen, radiant with joy, walked over, fixing Xing Ge’s slightly crooked bow tie and smoothing her hair.
“My goodness,” she scolded gently, “you’re about to become someone’s husband and you still can’t sit still?”
Xing Ge looked at the kind, motherly face before her and couldn’t help sighing inwardly. No matter what, this woman didn’t deserve the tragic fate waiting for her. She wasn’t a bad person, just a little strict with her daughter-in-law. Typical in-law tension, nothing beyond the usual. There was no reason for things to end the way they would.
“Ah Feng.”
A woman’s voice came from behind. Xing Ge turned and saw the bride, Meng Hui, standing there in a white gown, lips pressed tight, brows drawn with faint melancholy. Naturally, she was marrying a man she didn’t love.
Xing Ge had to bite her tongue not to curse out loud. You’re hiding someone else’s baby and still acting like the victim. Who exactly should we pity here?
To be honest, the woman’s looks were average at best, maybe even a little matronly. She wasn’t half as striking as Zhou Jie from the last world. Her only redeeming feature was a calm, autumn-like temperament.
The problem was that standing next to Chen Feng, she looked more like his aunt. And when she stood beside the well-maintained Mrs. Chen, they could have passed for sisters.
Seriously, what kind of warped beauty standards did this world even have?
A group of eligible young men all infatuated with a woman who looked ten years older than them, fine, maybe the author wanted to prove that “inner beauty conquers all.”
Xing Ge rubbed her nose and thought dryly, Sure, let’s call it true love.
Mrs. Chen’s smile twitched as she looked at her new daughter-in-law, who somehow managed to look older than her and then patted her son’s shoulder.
“You and Meng Hui chat. I’ll go greet the guests. The ceremony’s about to start.”
Xing Ge’s gaze swept past the bride and landed on the man standing beside her, a rough-looking guy with a street-punk aura. Her first instinct was to turn and walk the other way.
Chen Feng had been born with a silver spoon, pampered since childhood, the very image of a refined young master. The bride’s “friend,” on the other hand, was a bona fide thug. He’d grown up fighting and swaggering his way through life. Because of Meng Hui’s constant quarrels with Chen Feng, this guy often showed up to “teach Chen Feng a lesson,” asking why he didn’t cherish such a “good woman.”
This guy’s brain must be leaking somewhere.
If Meng Hui had just lived decently with Chen Feng, kept her toxic relatives in check, and most importantly, stopped two-timing, their marriage might have actually been salvageable.
“Chen Feng,” the thug, Lin Qiang, said as he rolled up his sleeves, “I’m entrusting Xiao Hui to you. You’d better treat her well or I’ll beat you up!”
The “heartfelt” words made Meng Hui smile for the first time that day, her melancholy face softening.
But Xing Ge wasn’t in the mood to play along with the original script. She picked up a champagne flute from the nearby tower, twirling the pale gold liquid lazily, and asked, “Beat me up? And what gives you that right? Are you her family?”
Lin Qiang froze, caught off guard, then puffed up his chest. “I’m her best friend!”
Xing Ge smiled faintly. “Oh? Best friends, huh? Best friends who hold hands in front of the groom?”
Her glass hit the floor with a sharp crack, shattering into pieces. All eyes turned toward them.
“Lin Qiang. Meng Hui. Don’t take me for an idiot. If you have someone else in your heart, just say so! I, Chen Feng, don’t need to beg anyone to stay!”
Meng Hui’s face went pale. She staggered back, clutching her barely showing belly in panic. Lifting her gaze, she met Chen Feng’s calm, mocking smile. Her heart skipped a beat. Did he… know?
“Bro, what’s going on?” The best man, Mu Qing, and a few others rushed over.
“Nothing,” Xing Ge said smoothly, straightening her sleeves. “Just needed to vent a little.”
After all, Ji Dan had said she couldn’t destroy the main plot. So she still had to marry the heroine. But whether she acted loving or cold, well, that was entirely up to her.
Mu Qing looked troubled and pulled her aside. “Bro, about your bride…” He hesitated, then clenched his teeth. “She’s not… pregnant, is she?”
Everyone knew Chen Feng was the definition of a gentleman. He’d dated his first love for five years and never gone beyond holding hands. There was no way he’d gotten his new bride pregnant. Besides, none of their circle even knew who this woman was. Only that she was supposedly a college classmate.
The moment the words left Mu Qing’s mouth, he regretted them. The man before him lowered his head slightly, expression unreadable. “So, you already know.”
Mu Qing’s eyes widened, then his temper flared. “That woman’s shameless! She’s carrying someone else’s child! I’m going to confront her right now!”
Xing Ge caught his arm quickly. “It’s already the wedding. Causing a scene now would only embarrass my parents.”
“But—”
“Don’t worry. I’ll divorce her soon enough. I’m not that easy to fool.” She patted his shoulder reassuringly. “Your brother doesn’t take silent losses.”
Mu Qing exhaled and nodded. “Alright, I’ll listen to you. Still, it’s just… unfair.”
When he returned to the group, his face was so dark that everyone began whispering, wondering why the usually cheerful best man looked ready to murder someone.
The wedding march began. Meng Hui nervously took Xing Ge’s arm, trembling as they walked down the aisle. Even through the fabric of her gown, she could feel his distant coldness, and her anxiety only grew. The tears and self-pity she’d been nursing earlier vanished completely, replaced by unease.
Just as they reached the priest, a deep voice cut through the hall.
“Didn’t expect Chairman Chen to be so generous, marrying such a shameless woman!”
Meng Hui’s entire body went rigid. Her face, hidden beneath the veil, was streaked with tears. He… how could he say that about me?
Wei Yue, the male lead and CEO of Wei Corporation, stood at the back, eyes filled with ridicule. So she really had the nerve to run off and marry another man? Was I not enough for her?
Mr. and Mrs. Chen were stunned. The infamous president of Wei Corporation is here? Hadn’t he said he wouldn’t come? And now he was insulting their family in public!
Mu Qing nearly lost it. “President Wei, don’t you think it’s a bit immoral to crash someone else’s wedding?”
Wei Yue shot him a cool look, then sneered. “I’m merely feeling sorry for Chairman Chen. What a waste.”
Meng Hui’s blood drained from her face. She looked at him pleadingly, silently begging him to stop. He only smiled, sharp and cruel.
The wedding was already falling apart when the handsome groom finally spoke, his voice lazy and detached.
“Oh? I didn’t realize President Wei was so invested in my marriage. Thanks for the concern. But the way you keep staring at my bride, it makes me wonder if there’s something between you two. If you’re really interested, why not say so? I’ll gladly give you my blessing.”
Then, with a sigh, she added, “You know, after enjoying roses and lilies, sometimes I just want to try the simplicity of wild grass. Unfortunately, I played too long, and now I can’t shake her off. What a headache. President Wei, how about you take my place?”
Wei Yue froze. That was not how this was supposed to go. According to his intel, Chen Feng had been madly in love with Meng Hui. So why did he sound like he couldn’t stand her?
“Hmph. No thanks. A woman like that would only dirty my eyes. I’ll leave her to you, Chairman Chen. Good luck taming her.”
With that, he stuffed his hands in his pockets and strode off, leaving a room full of stunned guests behind.
What the hell kind of conversation was that? everyone thought.
Meng Hui’s knees buckled. After that string of humiliations, her mind finally snapped. She collapsed in a faint.
Xing Ge caught her before she hit the floor. “Call a doctor!”
She might despise the woman’s behavior, but she had no intention of letting her or the baby die. The kid was innocent.
Lin Qiang panicked. Crap! He knew the baby in Meng Hui’s belly belonged to Wei Yue. He rushed forward, snatching her out of Xing Ge’s arms.
“I’ll take her to the hospital!”
A cold voice sounded behind him. “Lin Qiang, do you really think a street thug like you knows any decent hospitals?”
Lin Qiang froze, jaw tightening. “Chen Feng, someone’s life is at stake, and you’re still talking nonsense?”
The man’s lips curved faintly. “There’s no need. My private doctor is already on the way. Do you think a hospital would be better equipped than that?”
On Xing Ge’s signal, the groomsmen moved in, taking Meng Hui from Lin Qiang. No matter how tough he was, he couldn’t fight off seven or eight grown men. Powerless, he could only watch as the woman was placed on a couch while the arriving doctor in a white coat began a thorough check.
After a tense silence, the doctor finally relaxed. “Mrs. Chen is about three months pregnant. The baby is stable for now, but excessive emotional distress isn’t good for the mother or child. Please ensure she stays calm.”
The room fell into dead silence.
Mrs. Chen nearly fainted again. She grabbed her husband for support, her voice trembling. “Xiao Feng… this child…” She knew her son too well, there was no way he would have done something like this before marriage. But he’d insisted on marrying this woman, so she hadn’t dared object.
Mu Qing, seeing there was no way to hide it now, clenched his fists. “Auntie, that’s definitely not my brother’s kid! I was on business trips with him for half a year, we even shared a room to save money! If he’d had a woman, I would’ve known!”
Xing Ge froze. Well… that’s some serious loyalty.
Even being mistaken for a couple didn’t faze him if it meant defending his brother’s honor.
Mr. Chen’s face darkened, but he quickly regained composure. “Son, what are you planning to do? Do you still want to marry this woman?”
Xing Ge sighed. “Let’s pause the wedding. Meng Hui has nowhere to go anyway. She can stay here and rest until things are sorted out.”
She wasn’t interested in dragging this farce out any longer. But the plot still had to advance, and the heroine had to stay in the Chen household.
Ah, this damn “female lead halo.” No wonder cannon-fodder characters are always depressed or die early!
